A very large oil on canvas by Italian painter Nicolas De Corsi: where was this painting made?

Some paintings stop you in your tracks without your quite knowing why. This one is among them. A very large oil on canvas, signed by the Italian painter Nicolas De Corsi and dated 1919. It is a piece we are particularly fond of, and we invite you to play a little game: can you guess where it was painted?

An Italian painter of the early 20th century

Nicolas De Corsi (1882-1956) was an Italian painter. Born in Odessa, he lived for many years in Torre del Greco, on the Neapolitan coast. His painting is spontaneous, intimate and naturalistic: he loved to capture the nuances, colours and light of sunrises and sunsets, especially those of Naples.

All of this can be found in this 1919 painting.

The answer: the hill of Posillipo, in the Bay of Naples

Did you guess it? This oil on canvas depicts the hill of Posillipo, overlooking the Bay of Naples.

The place is far from insignificant. It was from the heights of Posillipo that, from the 1820s onwards, the painters of the famous Posillipo School observed the city and its bay, capturing panoramic views and Mediterranean light. A century later, Nicolas De Corsi follows in this long tradition of Neapolitan landscape painting.

A peaceful atmosphere between sky and sea

What strikes you first is the atmosphere. The sky and the sea melt into one another, in a very soft gradation of light.

In the foreground the scene comes alive: it is the fishermen's return one evening, on the beach, with figures that bring the scene to life across several planes. The mood is peaceful, almost suspended. You feel as though you have stepped into another era, where life moved at a calmer pace.

An exceptional size: a truly panoramic painting

The other remarkable feature of this work is its size! Very few works of this size by this painter are known.

The painting measures 2.22 m by 1.52 m (about 87 by 60 inches), frame included. It is a true panoramic painting, one that commands a room and can become the starting point of an entire decorative scheme on its own.

An elegant frame in the 17th-century taste

The painting is beautifully framed in a guilloche-carved moulding in the 17th-century taste, very elegant, which complements the softness of the scene without overpowering it. A good frame is part of the work: it sets it off and anchors it in the interior.
