Restoration of Antique Wood Panelling: A Subtle Five-Tone Patina

Restoration of Antique Wood Panelling: A Subtle Five-Tone Patina

An antique wood panelling scheme often requires restoration. In this room, we oversaw every stage of the project: dismantling, repairing the panels, and completely reworking the patina. Here, step by step, we show how beautiful antique panelling can regain its full depth and richness.

Dismantling, repairing and reassembling

It all begins with dismantling the panelling. Over time, several panels had developed splits. Each was carefully repaired and reassembled before being put back into place. It is a lengthy, painstaking process that is essential to ensuring both the structural integrity and the beauty of the finished scheme.

A patina completely renewed by an artist

The patina was recently reworked by Véronique, an artist we work with regularly whose expertise truly makes a difference. Her craftsmanship is immediately apparent in the subtlety and delicacy of the painted decoration.

An original colour and a delicate touch of gilding

The starting point was a colour identified on original 18th-century elements. Using this shade as a reference, a delicate gilded detail was applied over a prepared bole ground, recreating the appearance of antique gilding, as though it had weathered the passage of centuries.

The richness of the nuances: five to six overlapping tones

It is all about subtlety. Through the skilful application of glazes and the use of waxes, the patina reveals at least five to six distinct tones. These delicate, overlapping nuances bring the panelling to life, giving it a remarkable sense of depth and a finish that feels natural rather than static or uniform.

A restoration that respects the character of the room

Restoring antique wood panelling means preserving its history while restoring it to its former splendour. Dismantling, repairing, refinishing the patina and applying gilding: every stage plays an essential role in achieving a result that sits naturally within the interior.
